Simple Homemade Chili

This recipe is from Budget Bytes and more specifically is one of 15 items on the Emergency Preparedness menu. This came out well, but my favorite Budget Bytes chili remains the Weeknight Black Bean Chili. This required four canned goods, ground beef, and lots of spices. It also required garlic which I always have on hand.

So I started with the garlic. I pressed two cloves and added to the pot with olive oil.

Then there was the special situation with the ground beef. So during this pandemic, I could not find ground beef. So I bought frozen beef patties.

Each patties is 4 ounces so I took 4 of them out to thaw. And then tore them apart to turn them back into ground beef.

I added the beef to the pot along with onion powder since that is my go to avoidance of actual onions.

Next I worked on the beans. The black beans and kidney beans needed to be drained.

And then I added them to the pot.

Then I added the diced tomatoes and tomato paste. And some water.

I made the chili seasoning – chili powder, cumin, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.

I mixed that all together and let it simmer for 30 minutes.

And it was finally ready to be served in a bowl.
